Why This Priority?
Our nation’s abortion polices
- result in life or death for millions of innocent children.
- violate our nation’s founding principle and jeopardize the future of our nation.
- test our willingness to follow our Lord’s command to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
“We wish to reiterate that the intentional destruction of innocent human life, as in abortion and euthanasia, is not just one issue among many. Catholic teaching does not treat all issues as morally equivalent. The protection of human life from conception until natural death is the preeminent obligation of a truly just society.
The Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania -October 16, 2008
Should we be “Single Issue?” Voters?
Yes, if that issue involves a fundamental right to life for a certain group of human beings, and there is only one morally legitimate position on that issue.
For example, no person would vote for a candidate who, although “personally opposed to slavery,” supported “a white man’s right to choose” to own slaves.
Similarly, we have a moral obligation to withhold their vote from any candidate who, although “personally opposed to abortion,” supports “a woman’s right to choose” to have her child killed before birth by abortion.
Is It Proper to Impose our “Morality?”
The right to life of all human beings is at the heart of all morality and the foundation of justice, which is the fundamental purpose of civil law. The protection of this right no more legislates one religious viewpoint than do laws against murder, child abuse, racial discrimination, theft, etc.
The Sanctity of life
In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled through the Roe v Wade decision that abortion was legal throughout the nine-months of pregnancy. Since then over 55 million babies have been killed by abortion. In Pennsylvania, over 18,000 children are killed by abortion each year. The majority of Americans believe in the sanctity of life and want preborn children protected by laws. It is vital that we elect public officials that share this belief and are willing to defend the sanctity of life. Other issues are important but if candidate for office is not willing to defend the most innocent among us how can he be trusted to protect the rights and liberties of each one of us?
Funding of Abortion
Planned Parenthood is world’s largest abortion company. This organization corrupts our children by encouraging sexual promiscuity and distributing drugs and devices to children behind the backs of their parents. PP receives millions of dollars each year in tax-payer funds. State and federal governments should not use tax payer money to help an organization dedicated to killing children and undermining the family. Elected officials must commit to Defund Planned Parenthood and similar organizations.
Marriage and Family
Marriage is between one man and one woman This relationship is the foundation for the family, the most fundamental unit in our society. Traditional marriage and the rights of the family must be defended against the assault of those opposed to this sacred institution. Protecting marriage protects children who are best raised by a mother and a father.
Health Care “Reform, ” the Right to Life and You!
Through a series of votes in November 2009, and in March 2010, Many Representatives voted for “Health Care Reform” legislation (aka “Obamacare”) that will result in the largest expansion of abortion and other assaults on the sanctity of human life since the U.S. Supreme Court’s January 22, 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
Specifically, this legislation will
ü Restrict the ability of senior citizens to supplement their health care
coverage with their own money, so seniors will receive only the care
authorized by the federal government.
ü Severely reduces Medicare reimbursements to physicians, particularly specialists, thus reducing the number of specialists available to treat seniors resulting in further rationing of health care for seniors.
ü Establishes “Comparative Effective Research Committees,” that will stifle medical innovation and care to those with a chronic or terminal illness.
ü Provides $11 billion in annual federal funding for Planned Parenthood “clinics” (by deeming them to be “community health centers”) so Planned Parenthood can provide abortions, contraceptive drugs and condoms to minors with no parental involvement.
